The sentence is:
I could not avoid the empathy of feeling the pain he must've
endured.
The intended meaning is that the author could not help but feel the pain of the person "he" refers to. Does this sentence actually make sense the way it is written?

It doesn't make sense to say empathy of feeling. It would be better to rephrase this. Something like I could not avoid empathizing with the pain he must've endured.
