Whats the initial password for root user with fresh postgresql installation

I installed posgresql with brew install postgresql
. Now I want to create a database with $ createdb foobar
. However, when I try this from the command line it asks me for a password. However, the password it is asking me for is not the role postgres
, but a role with the name of my user account with which I am logged in. I tried $ psql -U username
and it again asks me for the password for username
. I can, however, log in with the default postgres
user like so psql -U postgres
.
What is the default password for my useraccount? Working on OS X 10.13.6
postgresql macos
