R: add function into the derivative table

My final goal is to get an nls() approximation, which wouldn't require starting parameters.
For this, I use the selfStart() function. However, it requires the model function to be in the derivatives table.
I print the following:
Gauss <- function(z, A, sigma, z0, C){
C + A/sigma * (2*pi)^(-0.5) * exp(-(z-z0)^2/(2*sigma^2))
}
drule[["Gauss"]] = alist(z = -A/sigma*(2*pi)^(-0.5)*(z - z0)*exp(-(z-
z0)^2/(2*sigma^2))/(sigma^2), A = NULL, sigma = NULL, z0 = NULL, C = NULL)
However, I still get the error "The "Gauss" function is not in the derivatives table".
Does anybody know, why doesn't it count?
If I write drule$Gauss into the console, it shows the derivative OK.
Thanks.
