Is it possible to use past simple? Help me, please

There's the following sentence in my Grammar book:
'It was a lovely surprise to find that all the washing-up HAD BEEN DONE while I was asleep.'

The only answer mentioned in the answer key is past perfect(in capitals). Since today, I've thought that we use past perfect to clarify the order of actions but if it's clear by itself we don't need one.
I feel, in this sentence the order of actions is obvious, so WAS DONE is also possible. Even more-the past perfect isn't necessary :( I know I'm wrong, please help me 😍

Thanks in advance

  • Everything to do with grammar books and answer keys is your homework; it has no place here. Since you are here 'It was a lovely surprise to find that all the washing-up had been done while I was asleep' is not only fine; it's exemplary. That your answer key uses capitals at all makes it suspicious. We use past perfect not to clarify but to describe the order of actions. It's not relevant whether the order is obvious: was done could not be reasonable here. If past perfect isn't necessary, can you explain why not? "Is there possible…" must always be "is it…"

  • Firstly, I am an intermediate self-learner, this isn't my homework... It was just a controversial answer for me and I needed the explanation from someone competent.. I'm confused because as I know, if we use past simple in several following sentences( I woke up; brushed my teeth; had breakfast....), it expresses the order of actions. So if there is: 'was done' 'while I was asleep', they seem to be following actions... So, the order of actions i see clearly and that's why I think that past perf. isn't necessary :(
