Trying to Connect MySQL to Google Cloud SQL

I'm trying to get MySQL Workbench up and running with Google Cloud SQL credentials. Having a tough time with things. Ugh. In Unbuntu, I put in this connection string:
~/bin/cloud_sql_proxy -DB:us-central1:etc, etc, etc...fb5.json
I got that from one of the DBAs who I work with. Everything works fine on a Mac, and most people in my office use Macs, but I'm using Windows 10, and the setup seems to be a little different for me. Anyway, when I open Unbuntu and run the script above, it runs and says 'Ready for new connections'. Then, i switch over to MySQL, and I get this error message: 'cannot connect to database server'. Also, I see 'service status stopped' in MySQL. So, I go to 'Startup/Shutdown' and click 'Start Server'. Then, I am prompted to enter my password at least 10x, and then I simply give up. I have tried this a few different ways, and I can't get MySQL connected. Is there a simple way to actually diagnose what is wrong and simply fix it?
