“this kind of thing” vs “this kind of things”

I want to know the precise difference between "this kind of thing" and "this kind of things". I found some sentences where each version feels more natural than the other but I am sure that depending on the context the two sentence structures have a different meaning. I just cannot figure it out myself.
So a complete answer will have the difference and the usage of each "this kind of thing" and "this kind of things".
Please do not mark as duplicate. I am aware of this and it seems not to address my question. There, @choster says that "this kind of things" is not a common grammatical construction. Perhaps this is true but it does not seem to be the case in my field. I recognise that when doing so most of the time the "thing" is a plural object, or it talks about a particular non-specified concept like "number".
